MAT -Management Aptitute Test Analysis

The MAT Management Aptitute Test paper comprised objective multiple-choice questions . In MAT it is important to use the allotted time wisely as students had to answer 200 questions in 150 minutes. Each question carried one mark. There was negative marking of 0.25 for the wrong answers.

The paper had questions from 5 different areas, viz. Verbal Ability, Quantitative Aptitude, Data Interpretation and Data Sufficiency, Reasoning Ability and General Knowledge, with exactly 40 questions in each of them. The level of difficulty of last exam was average.

In QA, the questions from pure Geometry were missing, though Mensuration and Trigonometry were present. Almost all the options were very unambiguous, so wise guessing proved fruitful.

Questions on Data Interpretation were categorized in Bar graph, Pie-chart, Tables and Line graph. Most of questions are calculation intensive. In some cases options were also very close. So overall the section was time consuming. Five questions were asked from each area of Data Sufficiency and Data Comparison.

Questions on Reasoning were quite straightforward. (Linear arrangement, Assumption based logical reasoning, Blood relation). Some reasoning based individual questions were lengthy. But the questions asked on Directions, Series were some of the single questions which were very easy.

Language comprehension was of easy to moderate difficulty level as most of them were SDQ (Specific Detailed Questions) type and for that no logical inference was required.

SECTION I: Verbal Ability

This section was of the typical MAT papers of earlier years. The fill in the blanks questions were quite easy having 2 blanks on account of the very ‘out of the way’ choices that were given which helped one eliminate them. Grammar based questions were of moderate level. The RC section was of average difficulty level. This time Analogies were reintroduced with moderate difficulty level. SECTION II: Quantitative Aptitude

The QA section in MAT comprised Arithmetic and Pure Maths questions. Arithmetic had around 12-15 questions and was easy. The questions mostly focused on Time and Work, Alligation, Ratio, SI/CI, Pipes and Cisterns and Time Speed Distance. Questions from Probability made the test takers realise the presence of Algebra. This proved to be an easier section for students on account of the numerous questions from ‘Analytical Reasoning’. Critical Reasoning questions were a bit dicey, but should have been attempted by those who are comfortable with those areas.

Virus threats:The top 100 most dangerous websites with malware

Internet security company Norton Symantec has come up with a list of Top 100 Dirtiest sites, which could infect your computer with malware.
Malware is a software that can damage or compromise a computer system without the owner's consent.Visiting any of the named websites could expose a computer to infection and put the personal information into the hands of unwanted people.
"What people don't realise is when you type in a website, you're bringing down information on a page and with it could be malware," News.com.au quoted her as saying.
The list was compiled with the help of global data collected on Norton Safe Web, a site that analysed websites' security risks.
The infected sites had on average 18,000 threats and 40 per cent of the sites had more than 20,000 threats, while 75 per cent of websites on the list were found to be spreading malware for over six months.
Most websites in the list had adult content with unprintable names, suggesting they contained hardcore pornography.Some others sites include those on ice skating, deer hunting, catering and legal services.
Hackers can apparently obtain personal information using keystroke-logging software from both PCs and Mac computers

The mobile phone maker, Nokia, plans to reveal a beta program as well as demonstrate Silverlight applications running on the handsets. Nokia also plans to ship handsets with the runtime embedded that can run Silverlight applications, beginning first with the high-end Series 60 smartphones.

CAT vs MAT :But there is a qualitative difference. CAT - affiliated B - schools are ranked a tad higher than the MAT - affiliated ones. The CAT, which is administered by Indian Institutes of Management, is also accepted as the qualifying exam by about 20 other institutes, other than IIMs. In contrast, the MAT is a relatively new test, administered by the All India Management Association (AIMA), for other institutes. Though very few students in metropolitan cities appear for the MAT, most students in smaller towns try to adopt a combined strategy for cracking both, the CAT and the MAT, in hope of making it at least to one exam. The CAT is generally held on the last Sunday of November and MAT on the first Sunday of December every year.There are structural variations between the CAT and MAT papers. In sections on Quantitative Aptitude and Data interpretation the main difference pertains to the level of difficulty as well as the types of questions asked. The MAT is more formula - based while the CAT is entirely application - based. Therefore, the strategy for MAT should be to rely entirely on the "Frequently Asked Questions" given in reputed publications. Since the MAT seldom springs surprises, the section tests that one takes while preparing for the CAT would suffice. A student with average aptitude, comfortable with concepts, will get through the MAT, but you need to have an analytical bent of mind to crack the CAT. In the English section also there are variations. In the MAT paper, the emphasis is on facts - the stress is on grammar through analogies like match the following and fill in the blanks. But in the CAT paper, questions are inference - based like sentence structuring, the logic behind creating paragraphs, understanding the assumptions made in the passage, etc.In the CAT, time management plays a very crucial role for if you are able to crack 80-90 percent of the questions of a section, it would be considered a very good attempt. At the same time, there is virtually no pressure of time while cracking the MAT.

Sunday was a big day for MBA aspirants as nearly 2 lakh of them took the CAT (Common Admission Test) in 23 cities across the country for admission into B-school.About 35,000 students from the Delhi region appeared for the test.

Even as over two lakh aspirants were expecting a googly or two, Common Admission Test (CAT) for IIMs threw no real surprises this year.With a total of 75 questions in 150min, the exam pattern was same as last year.The total number of seats in IIMs this year is expected to be in thetotal range of 1700.
Their was mixed reaction from student's Math section of the exam tough, English was easy. “Paper was not a balanced one. Math was tough,” said one student. “The easiest was verbal section. English was easy but Math was tough,” said another.

Career Launcher believes that CAT was moderately difficult this year. When asked about what cutoffs does Career Launcher prescribe, Mr Lahiri said, “We expect the Quant section cut-off to be 26 to 28; Language section cutoff between 26 to 28 and LR & DI section cutoff between 34 to 36. Career Launcher believes that overall cutoffs will be in the range of 102 to 107.

However TIME The overall cutoff for at least one IIM call would be around 88-90 marks.
A careful analysis of the paper reveals that the Verbal Ability section, though shorn .

Let us now take a closer look at each of the three sections in the paper:
Quantitative AptitudeThe section was not only the most difficult in the paper; it was also, undoubtedly, the most difficult QA section to appear in the last several years. A cursory look at the questions in this section itself was sufficient to make an average CAT aspirant’s heart sink.
If one had started to think that the Quant section of the CAT had, in any respect, lost it’s “sting” or that it no longer struck terror in the hearts of the test taker’s, then one was in for a rude shock in this year’s QA section. The questions, were very evidently “tough” and finding a “familiar” question seemed to almost impossible. The emphasis was clearly on a thorough understanding of and proficiency in the concepts of QA and also on very high presence of mind – to glean the basic issue out of a seemingly complicated question in a very short time.
On the whole, a student with an average ability in QA could have managed just about 14+ marks in this section and any score from 19 to 30 can be considered to be good. Any score from 31 to 50 would be very good, and 50+, excellent.
The cutoff for this section is expected to be in the range of 19-21 marks.

Logic and Data InterpretationThe questions in this section were, contrary to most expectations, not very reasoning intensive. Almost all the sets involved considerable calculations. Also, there would have been a certain sense of discomfort felt by most students due to one or two sets which seemed to call for one’s judgment to be exercised in understanding and manipulating the data given.
The L & DI section of CAT2007 was a distinct departure from the trend of reasoning based DI sets, observed over the past few years.The one major relief in this paper was that in most of the sets, the data did not take much effort to understand but the calculation intensive nature of the sets sort of made up for this concession.
On the whole, a student with an average ability in DI could have managed a score of about 22+ marks in this section and any score from 30 to 44 can be considered to be good. A score in the range of 45 to 60 would be very good, and 60+, excellent.
The cutoff for this section is expected to be in the range of 30-32 marks.

Verbal Ability If there is any word to describe the RC passages in this section, it would be ‘excruciating’. The passages were very painful to read and almost impossible to comprehend; added to this were five very close choices which would have forced many students to give up the ghost!!All those who had counted on the Verbal area to salvage this section would have been thoroughly mauled (for the sheer lack of a more sinister word). The grammar questions would have stumped even the best experts of grammar and the Paragraph completion questions were tricky in the choices. The saving grace were the Para Jumble questions and the questions on ‘words/phrases’.
The four RC passages on “Paradigms in Scientific Traditions”, “Expressions of Experience”, “Ethnology” and “Sociology” were straight from hell(!) with most of them being so dense as to give serious competition to the densest element on this planet!! attempting around six to seven questions in two out of the four passages, with a strike rate of about 60%, would be quite an achievement – translating into a score of around 10 to 12 marks.
On the whole, a student with an average ability in VA could have managed a score of about 10+ marks in this section and any score from 18 to 30 can be considered to be good. A score in the range of 31 to 40 would be very good, and 40+, excellent.

MANAGEMENT APTITUDE TEST (MAT) :All India Management Association (AIMA) has been providing the service of aptitude testing since 1988 under the scheme of All India Management Aptitude Testing Service (AIMATS). Keeping abreast of happenings around is definitely task.

Admission to IIM-B -Good English

Admission to IIM-B will also depend on how good you are in English.IIM-B has made its admission process for class 2008 public.Besides the usual group discussion (GD) and Personal Interviews (PIs), the institute has added another component before selecting a student -- language score -- for admissions 2008.
the score for GD and GD summary content has gone down from 7.5 to 5. A new criteria -- group discussion summary language score with weightage of five will be added to arrive at the final aggregate score.While the institute has not revealed why it was including English, the reasons behind the move could be to filter as many students as possible and make the admission process tougher.
IIM-B has internally developed an admission process based on academic performance (school, high school and graduation), CAT score, GD/PI and prior work experience.
Entry into the premier B-school will involve Two-phase selection process.
1st phase is applied to all eligible candidates who appear for CAT 2007 to determine those qualifying candidates who will be called for GDPI.During the GDPI, two faculty members will evaluate each qualifying student on his/her performance in the group discussion, summary of group discussion, personal interview. For those with work experience, each interviewer will evaluate the quality and relevance of work experience.

These scores in combination with the pre-GDPI selection parameters will be used cumulatively in the second and final phase of selection to identify the candidates, who will merit selection from among those who appear for the GDPI.

TIPS TO SCORE WELL IN M.B.A TEST-:There's no fixed formula to ace CAT.However, a combination of strategy, planning and implementation should help you score well in this test.
Try and understand why you want to do an MBA. Your reasons should be good enough to constantly motivate you during the preparation stage. You should also inculcate the habit of reading regularly.
1.CAT is not a test to prove your mettle in specific subjects; you need to prove your overall ability.
2.The identification of easy questions is a difficult task and comes only after practice. Depending on a person's level of ease with the topics, the amount of preparation required may vary,you should try to leverage your strengths to the optimum. In the process, however, don't forget clearing cut-offs is essential to getting calls; doing well in one section and not clearing the cut-off in another will not help.
3.CAT is a pseudo standardised test-This means that, even though you cannot predict the exact pattern of questions like you can with GRE, you can still predict the answer pattern -- a net total of about 60 to 65 easiest possible questions Out of the 120 to 150 odd questionswith an equitable distribution in all three sections of the paper will get you calls from most institutions.

4. Most of you must have already started giving mock tests; this is the only way to figure out how you will fare at the
national level. There is no need to panic if you are not able to match your expectations in the mock CAT tests; look at every test as a learning experience.Do your best in all the tests. After returning home, analyse your performance. Adequate practice will give you the knowledge to make informed decisions -- for example, you will realise attempting a reading comprehension question might not be a good idea if you only have a few minutes left before the test ends.

5. You should be careful not to repeat the mistakes made you made in either the mock CATs or while practising at home. Make it a point to take a couple of tests every week from now on.

6. Set a goal while revising or studying the CAT preparation material.Here is an example of what I mean. If you have planned to study for two hours, you should also know what you hope to achieve at the end of those two hours. This will help you focus your effort. By setting a goal, you will achieve much more in those two hours.

7. As I had mentioned earlier, CAT is all about strategy. There are many talented people who have given this exam but have not got admission into the IIMs. One of the major differences between these people and those who made it to the IIMs is that the latter had learnt to maximise their result in the two hours allotted to CAT.They knew all sections were equally important and should, ideally, be given equal time unless you are exceptionally weak
in a section.

8. Coming to the paper, you should look at accuracy as a priority. Adequate practice will help you increase your
speed at a later stage of preparation, but absence of accuracy will lead to widely varying results and not help you get admission in the institution of your choice.

9. Lastly, flexibility matters.
One can have a strategy is place, but it may not work for you during the actual exam. You should always have a fallback plan. One particular section in the paper might be particularly difficult or you may find two sections have been merged into one. Such possible combinations should be analysed; you should also have a strategy ready in case you are faced

CAT is an Common Admission Test (CAT) conducted by the IIMs for admission to their Post Graduate Programs in Management (PGP).

The CAT is held once every year around November. Besides the IIMs, many other management institutes accept the CAT score for admission to their management programs.

CAT 2006 - Structure :

Overall Test: 3 sections, 2 sub-sections per section - 90 questions

Section I: Problem Solving - 30 questions
Section II: Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension - 30 questions
